Rugby, a small market town and yes it is the very place where the sport got its name. Where William Webb Ellis took the first tackle. Just outside in a small village. Proper country life. Outdoorsy, fun and full of charm. Growing up in the village, there weren’t many kids around, but Beardy and I made the most of it. He used to cycle around and I’d follow him on his paper round every evening. Feeling the cold, we’d serenade each other with Oasis. At home, Mum and Dad played the classics: Stones, Clapton, The Beatles. Music that became a backdrop to our lives and shaped my taste over time. I grew up with it all. An eclectic mix, each era adding a layer of perspective.
Unsurprisingly, I got into sports. My mates played footy and I dabbled in rugby. Turns out, I was pretty good, a happy coincidence. As I got older, it became more than just a pastime. I played at county level and for a while, it felt like something serious. But then life took over. Roehampton University called. South-west London. I studied the Science of Sport and Exercise. Life in London was good and uni introduced me to new experiences that shifted my focus. Accidentally, I found myself in this industry. Biomechanics led to ergonomics and before I knew it, I was running around learning the ropes of sales. Then I met Nat and we made a plan: to travel before we got too old for a working visa. Australia seemed perfect. Beaches, sunshine and a cultural synergy that fit like a glove. Now, we’re back and I’m ready to crack on with my career.
Randomly, I’ve always loved plaques. They provide the historical context and stories behind the architecture, products, or people I admire, bringing depth and meaning to the things I find fascinating. Too right!
